What Is It?
Coriander and cilantro are different parts of the same plant. It is both an herb as well as a spice. While in the US, the stem and leaves are called cilantro and the seeds are called coriander, the rest of the world calls the leaves coriander and the seeds are coriander seeds.
Where To Find It?
- I find fresh cilantro readily stocked in every grocery store’s produce section.
- Most stores also stock coriander seeds and powder in the spice section.
- Tip: Instead of buying coriander powder, dry roast coriander seeds and grind it yourself in a spice mill or dedicated coffee grinder – the difference is amazing!

- Flavor salsas, dips, soups (lentil soup) and other Mexican inspired dishes.
- Fresh cilantro as a garnish in Indian and Asian pastes and curries.
- Coarsely ground coriander seeds are a great addition to dry rubs mixes.
- Coriander powder is predominantly used in many Indian dishes.
