Introducing the new article series – Buy This Not That! A quick guide to making better low sodium choices at the grocery store.
Cottage Cheese
This summer I got addicted to cottage cheese parfaits – layered cottage cheese, nuts, berries, topped with a splash of agave and granola or Cheerios. So good!
However, cottage cheese, while really good for you, is also typically loaded with sodium. So I went on the hunt for low sodium options. The variety is truly amazing! Here is an example of two products from the same Friendship brand, same calories, fat and protein content. Big difference in sodium content!
The general rule of thumb is to look for a “no salt” label. I found the Friendship brand as well as Hood and the generic Stop and Shop brand of no salt added cottage cheese that were really good choices. Funny thing – when the salt is eliminated, the cottage cheese actually tastes sweeter and well – less salty! Guilt-free parfaits coming up!!
